I am ready to get chicks and need some help with basics. I have a large cage, heating lamp, feeder, water dish and lots of enthusiasm. What do u usually put on the bottom of it for easy clean up? And what is the best location in the house for it at this point? My chicken coop will be done in 3 weeks. My son is starting on it tomorrow.

! Great to have you with us! In the bottom of the brooder many folks use pine shavings (don't use cedar shavings - poisonous to chickens!!). On top of the shavings for the first couple of days you can put a layer of newspaper so the chicks won't eat the shavings (they don't know what food is yet). The chicks should have their heat at 95 degrees below the heat source at the bottom of the brooder. Make sure they have cooler areas to move in and out of.
They will need a chick starter feed and a feeder. When you say 'water dish' is it a chicken waterer or just a dish? Chicks will fall in and drown in a dish. Best location in the house is as far away as possible due to the noise of peeping chicks and eventually the smell (although frequent litter changes help this). Make sure you dip the chicks beak into the water when you put them in the brooder for the first time. Good luck to you!

I am thinking about getting 10 guineas tommarow what should I feed them and also how do make my profile have a picture.
