Hello everyone!

I'm new to BYC and to owning chickens. I live in Lincoln Nebraska (in the city limits) so I am limited to 3 chickens without a permit. I have two lots so lots of space for them to run (with a 6 ft privacy fence). I'm sure I will have lots of questions as time goes on. I purchased my chicks at a local Orschleans (spelling?). They were labeled layers so I guess I assume they are all girls but after reading some posts I realize that sometimes there is a boy in the mix. I would have to sell any rooster because they aren't allowed in town.

I don't even know what kind they are so maybe I will post pictures later. I have already fallen in love with them. They have such different personalities and quirks. I think they are about 2 weeks old but seem to be developing feathers at different rates. I am looking forward to making friends, getting all sorts of advice and great information here.

chickens are great and yes, don't be surprised to find a cockerel or two in with your hens. There are very few chicken hatchlings that can be sexed at a very young age. I have four roos, two that never crow. They're apparently on the bottom of the pecking order...lol. but they look after the hens and are much more, well, let's just say that they.ve got the looks that some of the girls don;t

Hi Mindy and welcome to BYC!

Yes, occasionally there are roos in the layers bins. But you may have gotten lucky and pulled pullets only!

If you need any tips and hints on raising your new babies, stop by our learning center here on BYC for lots of great reads on all the aspects of keeping poultry...

Great to have you aboard and enjoy your new babies!
