We started off in May with 8 White LHs, then 2 weeks later got 2 Asian Blacks and 2 Cinn Queens. Mind you we don't know a lot about chickens but did enough homework before hand about coop and run space required. My husband insists that they have plenty of space and are comfortable so they have much more room then (according to what we've read) "required" for 12 hens. We also went about 4 weeks ago and got 4 -2week old "sex linked" 2 brown/red 2 black/white all were supposed to be pullets....needless to say one of the black/white ones startled my husband this morning when it crowed! Now what? We not only didn't want any roosters they could cause neighbor problems (we are semi urban /semi country) and of course we got them from TSC so they don't give a flying rats you know what. We don't want to send it where its gonna get slaughtered that's not why we got them. Any suggestions? Anyway, we are new at this so please excuse any "dumb" questions in the future....

Are you sure the chicken that crowed is a cockerel? Hens can crow too.
Sex-linked means that you can easily tell the gender of the chicks as soon as they hatch, because their down color is different. So, you really shouldn't have ended up with a cockerel. Then again, you did get them at TSC...
If you post some pics, I can tell you is it's actually a cockerel.

Hello, thanks for joining us!

If you're 100% sure the crowing was from a male, you have a few options...a) send him to freezer camp, b) keep him in your flock, or c) give him away. It's my belief that once you give him away you don't really have any control over what happens to him. If you want to find him a new home, BYC has a free re-homing section under the Buy-Sell-Trade forum.

Best of luck!
