So I'm the loving owner of some awesome chickens. My husband and I bought 3 rainbow dixies and 3 golden sex link chickens about a month ago. Neither of us have any experience with chickens so we are learning as we go. Based on all the videos I've watched on how to tell the sex of your chickens, I think we have a flock of 2 hens, 2 roosters and an wait and see (one of my golden sex link hens died today :( ). If anyone has any experience sexing chickens and wants to weigh in, let me know what you think of the chicken above. :) He/she doesn't have the red wattle growth or the red comb like the other two dixies that I'm 99% sure are roosters. Anyway, that's all for now.

That chicken looks like a rooster and the one bending under him looks like a girl to me. But I may be wrong. I am judging by the feet, too. The bigger the feet, the more likely it's a rooster. I hope everything goes well for you.

I've never seen any rainbow dixies - are they sex links?. If so the females would be a different color from the males, so you can sex them at birth. The doll in your photo looks like a young roo to me especially by his stance. But as I said, I don't know that type of chicken.. You can post your photos at "what breed or gender is this." give the age of birds in picture. They should be able to tell you . Good luck with your flock.

I had a feeling he was a rooster. I kept telling him he was going to be a hen, but I had a feeling he wasn't listening. :) So I somehow picked out 3 Dixie rainbow roosters lol. What do I do now? My roosters outnumber my hens...Do I keep just one rooster and buy some more pullets? Can I keep multiple roosters or will they just fight? I really love all my dixies, they seem more bold and curious then the golden sex links. Maybe just because they are all roosters?? Lol I wonder how well new birds would get along with my current tiny flock. Oh yes and for clarification, the bottom two pics of the bigger white bird was the unknown. I threw in a rooster pic after the baby pics just for fun because he loves my shiny camera so much. :) I'll post the pic in the other forum, as well, just to see how much more confirmation I can get. Thanks

Welcome to BYC! Thanks for sharing your photos.

You may want to re-home a couple of the roosters (if it turns out 100% sure they are). The recommended ratio is 8-10 hens to 1 rooster. If there aren't enough hens, the roo will overmate and wear out the hens. So if you want to keep 3 roosters, you'd need to make accommodations for about 24-30 hens.

Good luck to you!

Welcome!

BYC is the best place to come to for all of your needs!! I had a rooster that was a Bantum, so pretty small. I thought that he was a she. He was pretty slow in the development of his comb, talons, and crow. I noticed often that he was grabbing at the necks of my females (apparently, a common rooster trait). I just thought he/she was setting dominance. Then one morning at 4:30 he found his voice... and a new home, sadly. I love roosters, but my neighbors not so much.
