Hi Y'all,
We're a married couple living in Bluff Dale, TX. Recently we picked up six cute Buff Orpington chicks that were starting to feather out and were on sale at tractor supply for a dollar each. My wife had to have them, and we've been talking about it for a long time. Turns out the cheapest thing about these chickens is the purchase price. We started doing minor renovating an old chicken coop attached to our brick garage that is at least 60 years old, and it has turned into a major project (My motto; do it right or don't do it at all, also my downfall). The chicks are growing and seem to be happy, and until yesterday things were going smoothly. My wife bought a 3x6' enclosure and covered it with regular chicken wire to keep any predators at bay, something we can move around the yard and to allow the chicks to play and discover during the day while their new home is being built, (they stay in an enclosure in the garage at night for now).
So we come out to find a hawk with its leg through the chicken wire ahold of one of the chicks and all the rest screaming bloody murder. It flew off but the chick is hurt in its thigh, and we have posted about it in the emergency/medical/injury forum. I think she will be ok but time will tell. We are looking forward to still having six beautiful laying hens and have taken much better precautions for now and the future. The people offering advice in the forums have been very kind and helpful, we are looking forward to learning a lot more about chickens. Thanks for the platform .
