(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am brand new to the chicken world. Where I live, to fit in, you must have chickens! haha. My flock all have different birthdays. The Orpingtons and Starlight are the oldest at 3 weeks old as of yesterday.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Starting off small. 9, so far! Go big or go home!
(3) What breeds do you have?
2 Buff Orpingtons
2 Barred Rocks
1 Starlight Egger
2 Ameraucanas
1 Calico Princess
1 Easter Egger
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I absolutely love how they all stop whatever they're doing when I come into their room. One of the Barred Rocks will actually fly right into my hand. I just find them absolutely delightful. Supposedly, we have all pullets. Jury is still out on one Barred Rock.......
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I pretty much dabble in multiple things. My husband is trying to get me to be a master gardener, but it's a slow go.... I also hike through the woods with my chihuahua mix. He loves jumping over logs. Or should I say, he loves trying to jump over logs. Mom has to help him over. I just love interacting with others and learning from those around me.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have a husband and multiple fur babies. 1 dog, 3 cats. Anywhere from 2 - 7 flying squirrels and three raccoons. I love the raccoons, but we need to come to an understanding that the chicks are off limits! We live in a wooded area in Westminster, MD, so I am becoming mother hen trying to prepare for every scenario of predator attacks. We have a very sturdy coop with run attached, and even bought the Chicken Guard automatic door. These are super spoiled chicks!
All in all, I will probably be posting regularly to get expert advice and to get other's opinions as I go on this new adventure.
I've included some pictures of some of my new flock. The little Easter Egger is a very inquisitive little gal. And she loves to snuggle!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
i was looking for bullying (turns out she's not) and whether one of barred rocks could be a rooster. As I said earlier, the jury is still out......
