Short of this story: I grew up in the mountains of WV hating my grandfathers chickens as a kid because I was paid a whopping 25 cents to gather eggs from an old chicken coop that was build in 1875, was full of rats as big as cats, and had a wasp population of about 125,000. That being said...I joined the Army 21 years ago and have done several tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. While out and about in the rural areas abroad I became increasingly impressed with those cultures ability to self sustain by having small family farms consisting of about a dozen chickens and a few head of various livestock. I'm going to retire next June from the Army and have a beautiful young son and a very understanding wife who supports my new found love for gardening and the decision to start raising chickens.

I recently purchased 5 pullets from the local feed store and 6 Easter egger chicks from a local breeder. All are just over a week old and have really taken to the 125 gallon aquarium I have fashioned for them as a brooder. The coop will start being built this weekend, Army permitting...LOL!! I never knew how many different breeds of chickens there are!! I have learned an enormous amount of information from this great community but I haven't the faintest idea what breed mine are. Are there just "mutt" chickens??? If so that is probably what I've got.

Anyway! Look forward to further correspondence with my fellow chicken connoisseurs.

Yea, I'm a little bass-ackwards!! I actually got my plans and bought the materials just have been so busy getting the garden in and doing the Indiana frost dance with my pepper plants!!lol!! I got some decent building skills so it SHOULD only take a good weekend and a couple late nights....hopefully!

And thanks for the praise, it's been a wonderful experience and I wouldn't trade it for anything...although I am looking forward to growing out my hair and maybe a beard!!

It's so great to see people making efforts to be more self-sustaining. That's in part my goal as well!
