Hello,

I was just delivered a 15 week old Easter Egger from dare2dream farms. Unfortunately they're closed on weekends but I need help identifying if my new chicken is sick. She is in a dog crate but hasn't moved, eaten, drank, or pooped since being here (an hour). I assume a lot of that is stress related given the car ride and looks like she was pecked a lot as she has missing feathers on her back side. My real concern is her breathing though. She makes a gurgling sound when she breaths almost like a snoring person. Is this the sign of an infection? I emailed the farm as well but scared she won't make it past today. Any help would be appreciated!

How hot is it? If she is in the shade with good ventilation, she could be hot from stress.

She would definitely be stressed from the car ride, and her unusual surroundings, so it would be normal that she might sit for an hour afraid to move. But she should soon if healthy. Most chickens hunker at first but then warily examine their surroundings.

However, the gurgling sound doesn't sound normal. Is she panting? (That could be normal as they pant with stress). Is there any sign of discharge around the eyes or nose?

Missing feathers on the vent. Photos please. She may have been pecked or there could be other things at play.

Photos would be very helpful.

Provide food, water, and cool shade with quiet. If she doesn't rally in another hour, then something sounds wrong.

Thank you for the reply. It has been a few hours and she has walked around the crate but no food or water intake. She will perk up for a few minutes every now and again but then will just sit down and not move. The gurgling has seemed to stop though which I think is good!
