(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We're brand new to chickens. We've kept a ton of other species before, but these will be our first birds. Any tips, tricks, and advice is more than welcome.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None currently. We preordered our first chicks from the hatchery, though. They will be here in April!
(3) What breeds do you have?
black australorp, two polish (buff and golden laced), barred rock, buff orpington, and a rhode island red
We wanted them to all look different. 😅
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
We've mostly kept reptiles and mammals over the years, so we're excited to be branching out. Those eggs are a nice bonus too.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Mostly animal husbandry, since we basically have a zoo at home. I do have some free time, though, that is mostly spent starting our new garden, gaming, crocheting, and researching various interesting topics (mostly zoology and animal husbandry).
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Just the two of us humans for now. The rest of the crew consists of 5 dogs, 8 cats, 2 guinea pigs, 2 ball pythons, 2 turtles, a hognose snake, and a red footed tortoise. We used to work with a rescue, so this is light compared to our active foster days. When I'm not at home tending to our home zoo, I'm working at our local zoo as an educator, teaching guests about animals and conservation. In case it wasn't obvious, I'm a little obsessed with animals.

That's cool you work and teach at the zoo! I think you will be happy with those breeds. It was a good idea to get two Polish so they have a buddy that looks like them.

Feel free to ask any questions along the way. There are tons of things to learn and many coop ideas in the Articles section and the Learning Center.

Thanks for joining and welcome to BackYard Chickens!

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Wow, you've got a dream job working in a zoo and coming home to one too! ❤️

That's a lot of "pets" but if you ever get a chance to share some pictures of them or some of them with us, we'd get a kick out of seeing them!
Thank you! Working at a zoo was my childhood dream job, so naturally it had to take over!! 🥰
This is our whole crew (top right to bottom left): Ditto, Slick, Denver, Ashes, Wisp, Tank, Sentry, Wesley, Lysander, Billy, Harlow (tabby), Treble (tuxedo goofball), Benson, Wednesday, Toast, Nixie, Atlas, Wyatt, Tilly, Rosie, and Ronan.

Welcome to BYC!!
I love polish chickens! I'll be getting 2 this summer! and I love reptiles too! there are so many cool species! I love leopard geckos the most!

Sounds like you have a wonderful crew of animals there, we're glad to have you here!
Polish were the first breed that I fell in love with!! Those little afros are too cute! We used to have a couple of leos. They are really sweet little geckos. I love that they always look like they are plotting something with their smiles.
