(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We're brand new to chickens. We've kept a ton of other species before, but these will be our first birds. Any tips, tricks, and advice is more than welcome.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None currently. We preordered our first chicks from the hatchery, though. They will be here in April!
(3) What breeds do you have?
black australorp, two polish (buff and golden laced), barred rock, buff orpington, and a rhode island red
We wanted them to all look different.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
We've mostly kept reptiles and mammals over the years, so we're excited to be branching out. Those eggs are a nice bonus too.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Mostly animal husbandry, since we basically have a zoo at home. I do have some free time, though, that is mostly spent starting our new garden, gaming, crocheting, and researching various interesting topics (mostly zoology and animal husbandry).
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Just the two of us humans for now. The rest of the crew consists of 5 dogs, 8 cats, 2 guinea pigs, 2 ball pythons, 2 turtles, a hognose snake, and a red footed tortoise. We used to work with a rescue, so this is light compared to our active foster days. When I'm not at home tending to our home zoo, I'm working at our local zoo as an educator, teaching guests about animals and conservation. In case it wasn't obvious, I'm a little obsessed with animals.
