It's only a temporary for a broody hen and babies...

I have felt so badly for my broody/mama hen and her babies, because they have had such a limited amount of space that didn't include any outdoors. I found a dog house that was being given away on freecycle. It was built 20 years ago, so it needed repainting and had to have a new floor put in due to rotting. I wish I would have thought to take a picture of it before we did our renovating, but failed to think enough to take any!

Anyhow, my husband cut the house down about 3 inches, put a new floor in, and then added a run. The boys and I painted (I actually need to do a few touch-ups around the bottom, thanks to all my extra help )and then moved mama and her babies in today. They love it! It still needs some wheels and a handle to pull it with, but it was good enough to move mama and her chicks in. Poor mama (Sunshine) was so excited to see the green grass, she just kept clucking away to her babies as if to say, "Look! Look! Green grass! Green grass!"

She does need more chickens, doesn't she!

Thank you all! I was happy with the way it turned out.

Quick question, is there netting on the bottom? How do you keep predators out with this kind of design, I've always wondered...

There is not any netting or wire on the bottom. The house has a floor, but the run has nothing. I am not a fan of chicken feet being on wire, as I believe it is hard on their feet. I personally wouldn't want to walk on wire with my bare feet all of the time.

I am going to add a few feet of wire around the outside to keep any predators from digging under.

Nice job! How many chickens will the coop hold?

I did not build it to house chickens (as Dawn has already stated), but I suppose it would hold one or two okay. I wouldn't put any more than that in there though. It was built to house my broody and her babies.

[Very nice and solid looking. I give up tho - what is the front door made of?

Doug

Honestly, I have no idea! lol! We recycle a lot of things here, and my husband noticed that someone had dumped a bunch of this fencing "stuff" off at the dump. He loaded it up and brought it home. It is a heavy duty plastic of some sort. So far we've made a little pen for the brooder babies to get out into the yard and sunshine, made a gate for the garden, and now the door for this pen with the stuff.

Cute... How heavy is it to move?

It's pretty darn heavy! It takes a few of us to move it around. I will be putting a handle on the front and two wheels on the back this weekend to make the moving part easier.

Are you referring to me or the mama hen Dawn?!?! If me, then don't ask my husband that question. He'll tell you that I most definitely do not need any more chickens! He about died when I told him that I was expecting another box of hatching eggs to arrive via P.O. tomorrow.
