Everyone has their personal favorites, but the Orpingtons seem to be the favorite for a lot of people. I personally LOVE my Wyandottes, but then again, I've never had an Orpington.
Dan- I suggest you get a book called "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens". You can buy it or maybe even find it at the public library. It gives you a lot of great information about how to keep chickens, tend to them when they are sick or hurt, and there is even a showing section. Another thing you would be interested in is a section in the book that discusses the different breeds and what their general characteristics are.
