My grand folks introduced me to chickens 60+ years ago. The Roosters were formidable - as they should be.

Been keeping them myself for 4-5 years now.

First flock: Barred Rock & Orphingtons. 6x8 coop, 250sf fully enclosed pen, 250sf "yard". Dogs dispatched the (flighty) Barred Rocks before they reached laying age. Orph's were GREAT layers and lasted a few years (various losses)

New Flock: 6 Orphingtons, & 1 Jersey Giant.

Small coop for now, larger by the Fall. 250sf pen - better Winter location, 1500sf yard. Adjacent 1200SF to be added for rotation...

Hello! Welcome to BYC from another old guy! Welcome to this great place! Orphingtons and Jersey giants are great birds, We have both of them.

:frow welcome, Colo Bob! Don't worry, lots of us are young people in old bodies, lol. Chickens are lots of fun when you can no longer (for example) go galloping across the countryside on fast horses. Or motorcycles maybe, as the case may be, lol! Please make yourself at home around here!
