Hello Gang!

My fiance, Jenna, and I seriously wouldn't have even attempted chickens if it weren't for this web site. Virtually every Google search led here. We've only had our chickens a couple weeks, but we planned for more than a year for their arival. Let me dive into the standard questions!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Yup. We started building the coop a couple months ago, then a month ago we made the run, and two weeks ago we picked up the birds!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Two. They're about 6 months old and are named Hennie and Maude. Hopefully by fall we'll have the routine down well enough that we can pick up a couple more bantams.

(3) What breeds do you have?

Silkies! Both are splashes, one light one dark.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

Every Google search led here.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Hmmm... the past year or so we've been busy fixing up our 1950s raised ranch home in Chicago. But we ride bikes, enjoy the outdoors. The usual stuff.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

Jenna and I are getting married this fall (Woo Hoo!). We also work together as recording engineers mixing sound for radio and TV commercials. One big goal with the coop was to make it automated. The light, fan and pop door are all on timers. Being the geeks we are there's even a Chicken Cam so anyone can watch the run. The neighborhood kids get a real kick out of the whole thing.

Being geeks also means we created a web site about the birds. There are lots of pictures of the coop and run construction at: CoyleChickens.com.

We've got a million questions, but if look at the pictures on the web site and notice anything out of whack, or have a suggestion on somehting we can change, please let us know here!

Thanks for all the info! Hopefully we'll be giving back soon.

Michael (& Jenna)

Your web site, building and planning are great. In fact I got so wrapped up in it I forgot to post the welcome, I am doing now.

The only thing I could see that I would change is, the lock on the nest boxes. It looks like hook & eye type. Raccoons can open nearly anything - this would be a cinch, they have opposable thumbs, brains and determination. I think a combination lock would give them pause but, that is overkill. There must be something inbetween.

Do your silkies roost at all? With their crests and beards obscuring their view, and wings that aren't good for flying - they usually just pile up on the floor .

Hello Drumstick Diva! The coop is inside the garage which is locked, so it's unlikely I'll ever have critters inside there. The hook, like the padlock on the run, are there more for the neighborhood kids. There are at least a dozen on the block of all ages, and while I encourage them to come check out the birds in the run, I want to make sure none of them leave the door open!

As for roosting, the silkies don't get it. We've trimmed back the feathers around the eyes, and that seems to make them move about more readily, but they don't seem to have any interest in roosting. Just last night for the first time, we put both birds up on it. One jumped down immediately, the other one seemed to settle in. We'll see.......

Hello and welcome .... so glad you joined BYC

Thats a fantastic coop. Love it :) And I love silkies too !

Good luck to you. Mine dont roost either. They just pile up with each other on the floor of the coop.

ETA: Just visited your website. Your silkies are beautiful

from California, I had a couple of Silkies but had to re-home them due to the other chickens picking on them too much :(

If (when!) we get a couple more birds, they'll be bantam cochins. Hopefully with a playground full of pipsqueaks no one will be a too big a bully!

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

My silkies do roost, but it took them almost a year to figure it out.
