New chickens in Dubai, UAE

I'm a British expat living in Dubai. As we're just moved to a villa with a large high-walled garden I decided to go out and get some chickens. I have 3 Egyptian Fayoumi's and made a coop from a recycled baby changer. I'm guessing they are Fayoumis, but they don't speak English at the local poultry market so it was a bit of pot luck.

The hens are holding up well with temperatures today at 45c/114f - its going to be a hot summer. I'd be interested to know of any other breeds that can survive such heat. I'm about to add a nest box extension onto the side of the coop and am thankful of all the useful information on the website.

The first night they needed putting inside the coop, but every night since they've been straight inside themselves.

I'll let you know when I get some eggs.

They do not look like Fayoumi's bred to a standard. That has not meaning for you use. Make certain they have good access to shade and water during the day together, otherwise look into a watering device that control evaporation. At night it might be hot enough that the birds lack an interest in the small and hot diaper changer provided. Bigger concern is impact birds will have on landscaping with is likely to be very delicate in a desert environment.

Hi and welcome to BYC! On another note, I think the UAE racehorse is going to come in 3rd in the Preakness this year. I truly think American Pharaoh is going to pull off the Triple Crown and Deliberately will come in second. Everyone thinks Frosted will come in 3rd, but they are wrong because he is a Grey. The great racehorse breeder Tesio proved that Bay and dark brown or even Black horses have better staying power then lighter horses like white or grey. Bays were proven to have the best endurance over distance. That UAE horse has been doing a great job on the track and I think the Preakness will suit him. I really like your chicks. that is one of my favorite colors. I think they look enough like Fayoumis to be that breed.
I always thought Fayoumis had a kind of "roadrunner" silhouette. I guess that makes sense considering their native environment.
About the landscape, I agree. My 6 Light Sussex "mowed down a lush patch of big weeds 36 ft. by 24 ft. in just 2 weeks.

Many thanks for your comments - I'm sure they are not pure Fayoumis by a long shot, but there's very limited choice here so I took what I could get. Anyway it is lovely to have some chickens at last - very therapeutic I'm finding.

Karen, I'm afraid I don't know much about racehorses, but I do know that they love their horse racing here and it's Sheikh Mohammed's passion - he has the money for it. I will keep an eye on the planting - the garden isn't exactly lush so I'm not too worried at the moment.

Centrachid - I will ensure they have plenty of water and have been getting some good tips on the website.

TwoCrows - thanks for your message, I'm a complete newbie and enjoying it immensely already.

As forages depleted they may try to explore beyond your high walled garden. They look like they could pull of 20 foot vertical flights fairly easily.

Very nice to meet you Paul, so glad you joined the Backyard chickens flock. I am in awe of your hens. I can't believe any could survive that temperature. The coop does look too closed up considering the heat. I would think they would do better with maybe two of the walls made of just sturdy wire for a lot of air circulation.
