Yes, a cheap coop in your garage for quarantine, injuries, broodies sitting on eggs or raising chicks (if you go that route) is fine as long as no predators can get into your garage.

Ha! We are the opposite of handy, but we only plan on getting two more pullets, so they shouldn't be too cramped for too long in one of those crappy prefab coops.

Welcome to the coop! Wow, I would love to see some pics of your flock! I use the Forums and Articles tabs at the top of the page to do research. You can get lost for hours. It's nice to know you are minutes away from getting help with questions and emergencies! I love that coop!!!

Thanks for the tip. I am used to Boolean syntax for search queries, so I'm struggling with Xenforo and Threadloom, but there's a lot of useful information here.

And then there were four... Meet Twinkie and Cuckoo, from Littleman Poultry in Rhode Island. They are currently quarantining in a dog crate in our garage (which is, fortunately, so full of junk that the dogs can't get to them - we don't keep cars in there, so carbon monoxide poisoning won’t be an issue). Weird question: do we need to change clothes completely EVERY time we interact with them, or are most diseases spread via proximity? Shoes aren’t a problem, but getting a willful nine-year-old to change clothes is… Rough…

You only have to change clothes if you go back to your original flock.
