Hi!
new to this community. I grew up with chickens as pets, but my husband and I aren’t really animal people, so we’ve avoided pets until this summer. Our kids have been begging us for chickens for a couple years (the only pet we said we’d consider), so finally for my son’s 10th birthday we gave in...and now we’re all hooked, including my 6 year old who is afraid of ALL animals!

We started with 8 chicks we got from the local feed store a couple days old. And then as I was doing more research, I found a local woman who breeds Black Copper Marans, and I really wanted the chocolate eggs, so a month later I picked up 3 more from her (the maran, an Olive Egger, and a second Easter Egger.) So now we have 11.

We have a fun variety:
Black Copper Maran (turns out he’s a rooster)
Olive Egger (turns out he’s a rooster too 🙄)
White Easter Egger
Brown Easter Egger
Cal X White Leghorn
2 Buff Orpingtons
Rhode Island Red
Speckled Sussex
Barred Rock
Black australorp

We love just watching them, they are so funny. We are excited to get eggs from them, too. we are also using the deep litter method and I am excited about utilizing their poo in awesome compost for the garden. (We are in the process of moving onto my parents’ 6 acres and starting to live more of a homesteading lifestyle.)

we are loving our new pets!
