new chickens VS. old chickens

Hi, welcome to BYC. Sorry to hear about your losses. Is your run safe from dogs now? For six chickens, your coop needs to have at least 24 square feet of floor space, not counting nests or space occupied by feeders or waterers. That's four square feet per hen. The chickens won't all sleep inside if it's too small, and the older birds won't let the young ones in at night if it's too crowded. You also need at least one foot of roost per bird.

A night light can be a good idea to get the birds to go in at dusk if the coop is dark and scary to go into, but once they are in and settled, it should be lights out for the remainder of the night to ensure they settle down and get a good night's sleep.

Good luck and enjoy your flock!
