I'm getting 8 10 week old chickens in two weeks I'll be getting 2 brown shavers, 2 Rhode Island x Araucana, 2 Orpingtons (1black 1 white), 2 Plymouth Rock and this coop https://www.chookmanor.co.nz/villa-chicken-coop (I want my chickens to be very happy with a lot of space). I was wondering if anyone had any advice on transportation for bringing them home? (It'll be a 1hr drive back home)

Greetings from Kansas, Hamesto94, and :welcome! Pleased you joined our flock! At 10 weeks warmth will not be a concern for the trip home. Ventilation might. A good thing might me a wire dog kennel - one of those fold-up kind if you have it - with a towel to cover it. The relative darkness will help to keep them calm but they'll still have enough fresh air. Big thing is don't suffocate in a tightly closed box.

Best wishes on your poultry adventure and thanks for joining BYC!

Thank you so much

I have got a big dog cage as I have two dogs (they can't get to the chickens) so I'll use that, should I also have watermelon on hand for water as I wouldn't want a water container spilling in the back of the car? Thanks for the advice!

They certainly don't need water for a one hour ride...and they wouldn't likely drink it anyway. They'll be jittery for a couple days after they arrive home. Another word of advice...when you get them home you might confine them in their coop with their food and water for a couple days so they get used to their new surroundings. Good luck to you!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Yes, I would think a one hour drive is ok without dealing with water. When you do get them home, definitely show them where the water is. I am sure they will all be fine once they get to your place and settled in.

Good luck with your new babies and welcome to our group! :)

Welcome!

As you have already received some great advice, I will just wish you all best.

One of our members had to transport her chickens over a large distance and I still chuckle that she stopped at MacDonalds to buy them a salad which they ate in their crate in the car.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
