The broilers cannot live a normal chicken life. Trying to extend their lives is difficult when they are raised with layers. Their feed requirements are very different.
 
Welcome to BYC. If you separate your broilers from the layers they have a chance to live a somewhat longer life. You also need to move feed dishes farther away so they actually have to use their legs and exercise to reach them.
 
:welcome :frow I never had broilers but have processed some dual purpose birds. I don't do it anymore but I hatch out a lot of chicks and only keep the best as future breeders. I sell the extra males. It helps to offset the cost of the feed. Good luck with your flock and have fun...

Cx birds are generally designed to harvest at 8 weeks. When I raise meat birds, they live on a meat bird feed with 18% protein their whole life. They spend 3 weeks in the brooder getting fed morning and evening. Then they spend 35 days on grass moving daily and getting fed what they can consume in 45 minutes both morning and night. With this paradigm, I'll still lose 2-3% to health issues associated with the breed.
