Hello everyone,

My name is Anya, I have 4 kids and 7 3 week old chicks. I am new to chicken keeping and after months of research I thought I was pretty well prepared. We got 8 chicks 3 weeks ago and lost one the next day when I finaly was able to see a long peice of their pine bedding down her throat. I bawled for a while after her labored breathing stopped. So now we have 7 chicks. I went for a variety, we have 2 Lavender cochins, 2 speckled Sussex, 1Isa Brown, 1 Cinnamon Queen, and 1 Buff Opington.

I'm starting to suspect that our Opington and one of the Sussex are boys because they are feathering much less then the others and getting big combs.

I have always wanted to try my hand at chickens and/or some homesteading. The home we bought 3 years ago, in the foothills of central California, is on an 1 1/4 acres and happened to have around 13 fruiting trees. Now that we are settled in and my littlest is 2 1/2 I decided I was ready to raise chicken too. My family has decided that at least this first batch of chickens will be "working" pets and will be cared for till their natural time has come.

So, I have ADHD and an halfway decent to pretty good at most every pass time I try, so, I have a lot of hobbies! I love building and creating. I tease my hubby that I was never a Toys-r-Us kid, I was a Home Depot kid. I can embroider, sew, I love making costumes, baking and so much more.

My kids 15M, 12F, 9M and 2F are all diagnosed with ADHD and Autism so we are a neurological exciting family :)

And for my Bonus answer, I have been looking a ton of stuff up about chickens and kept finding answers here so I decided to finally join instead of just lurking.
