Hello,
We bought 10 acres in Roy, WA in April, so coming from living in a townhouse to a farm is really different. We are trying our hands at homesteading.
With that much acreage and a coop already up I had to get chickens. So I did research and research and some more research. Decided to go with a cross of Buff Orpingtons and Rhode Islands Reds. (that's what they lady says they are) I got 10 little chickies :) We wanted dual purpose.
We also got 5 goats (Boer/Nubian), they are doing great eating our blackberry bushes down.
So being my first day with the little gals/guys, oh ya they are straight run so I have no idea what I have or how many of what.
I found a old fireplace screen and used it as a chicken tractor, good and bad. The good, its tall enough for them and they can move around. They seem to really enjoy it. The bad, very bad my 2 pups and a 3 lb yorkie stands on it and tries to get at them. Had a removable doggie fence and put that around the tractor. Holes are to big to just let chickies run free in that, but it kept the dogs away.
I love BYC, I have learned a lot of different things before getting my new family members and will defiantly be coming back to answer more of my questions.

We have 10 acres as well, and we moved here from the suburbs. It is awesome, if not a huge learning experience. It can be stressful at times, but it is certainly worth it.

Congratulations on the farm! I moved to the country last summer, and am loving it. I actually hatched my own Red-x-Buff's, and they are at nicer and quieter than Reds, although my eggs are smaller.
 
Please be very careful with dogs and chickens. Too many new members start their introduction with "My ___________ (insert dog breed name)massacred my flock.

Believe it a or not a lot of kills from Chihuahuas, yorkies, and doxies. Puppy are usually just playing but, sadly most dogs + chickens = DEAD chickens.
 
Lol my chiwawa ran up to my fresh freed rooster and learned she wanted none of that!!!! But I can see it being a problem with a submissive bird. Be watchful.
 
I make sure Im with the chicks. I know how my yorkie can be. If I need to move them I put my Lilie in her kennel, so Im not trying to do to much at once. She also thinks shes a goat herder. Thanks for the heads up.
