New chicks and pecking

I just received my baby chicks in the mail today. One didn't make it. I was wondering how common that is. Also, they peck at their thermometer, the brooder wall, and a bit on each other. Is there something besides their food that I can put in their brooder that they can peck at safely? Thanks so much!

Sorry about the one loss. Sadly yes it does happen. Also the pecking is normal. They peck everything, That is how they figure out what is edible and there is that whole pecking order thing. And yes the pecking order can start that early. My three week old's started a couple of days after being together.
