I am getting super excited that my chicks will soon be here! I just wondered when they got home should I do anything? I am going to give them water with electrolytes and chick feed . Should I check them over or just give them time to relax and get hydrated first. any help will be appreciated. The chickens I have now I got at 2 months so this is a whole new ballgame

I assume you have a brooder and heat lamp set up?
I know when I get chicks in the mail I take them, one at a time, from the box they came in, dip their beak into the water, and let them go. I wait a few minutes and watch them to see if any look lethargic, injured, or sick. I then give the whole lot another beak dip.

I'm in the same boat as you! I'm getting my chicks from Meyer's on Tuesday or Wednesday! I'm starting to actually get the new-mom jitters. I've got my brooder set up and ready, but with a Brinsea EcoGlow instead of a heat lamp. I'm really nervous about what to do about the post office. I'm thinking of going to my local post office tomorrow and talking to them about picking them up there when they arrive. I figure it'll be that many less hours the poor little chicks will be stuck in that box.

I'm going to watch your thread for any advice you get as it might help me, too! Good luck with your new babies!

Greeneggs, mine are coming from Meyers as well! Good idea about calling the post office, I might do that too. What kind are you getting?

I ordered a nice mixed flock of egg-layers to start my family off with. These will be pets (with egg benefits), so I'm hoping some of my family will bond to them just like I know I will (I had chickens growing up over 25 years ago. My order is for 1x Barred Rock, 1x Rhode Island Red, 1x Brown Leghorn, 1x Buff Orpington, 1x Black Australorp, 2x Easter Egger, and a mystery Meyer's Meal Maker. So 8 in all if they all make it to me okay.

Now I'm anxiously awaiting the email that says they've been shipped.

I ordered 3 leghorns,4 Rhode island reds, 3 barred rocks, 2 bo (1 roo and 1 pullet). Every time my phone alerts I think its my email Lol .
Bohemiachicks I am glad u had such a great experience and they are all soon well! Thank you for sharing with us. I know it makes me feel a little better. :)

I also have chicks coming from Meyer this week. 17 total. Really worrying about them getting here in good shape. Called my post office and they said they would call me as soon as they arrive and let me come get them.

I ordered (all female)

2 Barred Rocks
3 White Rocks
2 Buff Orpington
2 Partridge Rocks
2 Black Astrolorps
1 Gold Buff
2 Speckled Sussex
2 Silver Laced Wyandotte
1 Meyer Meal Maker

I wanted a couple Easter Eggers, a Maran or a Welsummer for the different color eggs but they were out of those when I ordered.

This is my first time doing mail order and I have a predator proof brooder all ready that we built inside our coop.

We did get some chicks from the feed store and successfully put them under a broody hen last month.....but a predator got into the stall in the garage where we were keeping them and took the chicks away, left one dead chick and didn't kill the hen. I wish I had another broody hen to put these under but a brooder will have to do. We even added hardware cloth over all the windows in the chicken coop and the brooder does not even have a crack a mouse could fit through.

Hoping for better luck this time around

Hope everyone else gets their chicks in good shape too
