After debating and lurking here for quite a while, I decided we needed chickens. Well, they showed up at the feed store on Thursday from Privett and I picked them up on Friday afternoon. Two RIR, 2 BR and 2 Ameraucana. I realize they're probably just pet quality and the Ameraucanas are probably more accurately called Easter Eggers, but we love them just the same. Without further adieu, here are the girls (they supposed to be all pullets):
The whole group.
This is Jane. After we got home from the feed store and had a bite to eat and a drink, everybody took a nap. Well, almost everybody. "Calamity" Jane kept pecking and harassing everyone and generally making a Calamity. After a while, she calmed down. As it turns out, she is the most fond of "people" time and is the most peaceful of the group when held. In fact, she's completely won my wife over. She's a full-on chicken lady now. By Sunday, her little muffs were starting to form nicely. I'll try and get a pick of those.
Everybody but Jane.
Most of the gang.
This is Gurty, Easter Egg, and Pinky (from left to right).

This is Gurty followed by the other RIR Sonny.
Here's the gang out for a walk around the kitchen.
When we let them out to play in the kitchen they like to test their wings. Pinky decided to test them in the brooder and made it from the top of a 2 1/2-inch high perch to the top of the waterer. We had the lid off the brooder, so then it was to the top of the box and out in to the kitchen. That was Sunday afternoon (not bad for 4-5 days old).
This is what it's all about though. Their wonderment is priceless and infectious and with any luck they'll learn something about responsibility and stewardship to boot.
