After debating and lurking here for quite a while, I decided we needed chickens. Well, they showed up at the feed store on Thursday from Privett and I picked them up on Friday afternoon. Two RIR, 2 BR and 2 Ameraucana. I realize they're probably just pet quality and the Ameraucanas are probably more accurately called Easter Eggers, but we love them just the same. Without further adieu, here are the girls (they supposed to be all pullets):

The whole group.

This is Jane. After we got home from the feed store and had a bite to eat and a drink, everybody took a nap. Well, almost everybody. "Calamity" Jane kept pecking and harassing everyone and generally making a Calamity. After a while, she calmed down. As it turns out, she is the most fond of "people" time and is the most peaceful of the group when held. In fact, she's completely won my wife over. She's a full-on chicken lady now. By Sunday, her little muffs were starting to form nicely. I'll try and get a pick of those.

Everybody but Jane.

Most of the gang.

This is Gurty followed by the other RIR Sonny.

Here's the gang out for a walk around the kitchen.

When we let them out to play in the kitchen they like to test their wings. Pinky decided to test them in the brooder and made it from the top of a 2 1/2-inch high perch to the top of the waterer. We had the lid off the brooder, so then it was to the top of the box and out in to the kitchen. That was Sunday afternoon (not bad for 4-5 days old).

This is what it's all about though. Their wonderment is priceless and infectious and with any luck they'll learn something about responsibility and stewardship to boot.

Sonny -- RIR
Gurty -- RIR
Pinky -- BR
Jelly Bean -- BR
Jane -- EE
Easter Egg -- EE

they are cuties! Welcome to the wonderful world of chickens and I'm impressed at how you've been able to tell them all apart. I've had my hens for about a year now and I still can't tell them apart

Good luck and enjoy!

I only name the ones that show some sort of uniqueness to me.. otherwise I can't tell them apart either

The EE are easy b/c the stripes somewhat different (Jane's are lighter). Same for the RIR, Sonny has more pronounce stripes. The BRs were easy at first b/c Pinky was huge, but now there isn't quite the same difference. It's actually getting more difficult.

Welcome!! I too am amazed at recalling their names. My grandaughter Molly is here and wants to name my little chicks I bought at tsc on saturday. She keeps running in and out of our utility room saying," mamaw, how bout" this name. She has come up with a different name for them all a dozen times!! But you will have a lot of fun with your chicks!

raising chicks to chickens is a great learning experience for all! we started out last year with some chickies (a few more than you but we loved them all the same) and my son has learned so much.

there is so much that the kids CAN do!

Cute chicks! But the brown/chipmunk colored ones are Easter Eggers, not Ameraucanas.

Feedstores and hatcheries don't sell real Ameraucanas.

(Easter Eggers are completely different from Ameraucanas as they are crossbred and have little Ameraucana gene in them anymore
