Our day-old chicks arrived today and all seemed healthy and active. They all had drinks, ate a few hours later. But now it's almost 11 pm and they're still all milling around in the brooder and I just found one dead. Temp seems right, 90ish. Food, water, no nasty peck wars going on, safe and warm... What are we doing wrong?

Some just can't handle the stress... are you certain they are eating and drinking?
Are you positive the temps are not too high?... that's my guess.

make certain there is an area where they can get away from the heat if they need to.
I find that the chicks will sleep in an area between real warm and kinda cool.

Sometimes chicks die for reasons out of your control, (shipping stress, ect). The chicks probably don't know 11 is past there bed time. they will sleep when they need to.

They have a cool and a warm side to the brooder and just seem to be sauntering around between the two doing chicken stuff: eating, drinking, pooping, cheeping. I guess the one could have just died because of the stress of transit, but they all seemed so hale and hearty a few hours ago. It was a shock to find one little peep perished. We've never gotten day-olds before, but have been more of a foster/adopt home for discarded hens, so this is new and scary territory...
On a side note, Mahonri was my great grandfather's name. Haven't heard that one outside family, well, ever.
