Found out today my local TSS will be getting in chicks starting 2-27. This will be our first venture in raising chickens. I'm excited!

Well no not right now. I was told they will have several breeds to choose from in the spring. I was also told they will order me any breed I want with a min. order of 6. I like the buff orpingtons, RIR's and white leghorns. Were really just getting them for pets the eggs will just be a added benefit! Any breed suggestions? thanks.

I picked up some White Leghorns from our TSC this last spring as friends to a lone chick who hatched out. While they are extremely funny in their antics they are also the most spastic and flighty birds that I have. Even more so that my Silver Sebrights. But boy can they lay eggs.

I also have red sex links that are prolific layers.

My favorites though are my White Rocks. Very stocky and hardy. The hens are also good layers of brown eggs.

How exciting!

excuse me for my lack of knowledge on the subject but when you refer to a breed as "flighty" what do you mean??? thanks

Flighty - They like to fly. I had to put and extra 8 feet of deer netting around the run to keep them in and some still manage to make it out.

They're also very spastic. They're the first to run around screaming "The sky is falling" when I go out and drop a feed bag in the run.
