new chicks

We were told we didn't need grit. It shouldn't hurt them though if you feed it to them. It also depends on the kind of feed you get. Our first bag was just pellets of finely ground meal. The new bag of feed we bought has little pieces of grit and corn in the pellets. When you start feeding the chicks other foods, you should make grit available. Ours started eating broccoli at 2 weeks old.

The medicated feed contains a drug to kill coccidia. We got non-medicated feed, too, However, after reading enough stories on here about people's chicks dying suddenly due to coccidia, I ordered some Corid to mix in their water. I'm going to treat them for 5 days and then keep in on hand in the event of a coccidia outbreak in the future. My chicks are 6 weeks and there have been no health problems with them, but better to be safe than sorry. Keeping the brooder/living area clean seems to go a long way with regards to having healthy chicks.
