New Chicks!

My family and I are planning on getting chicks on Friday! We have done a lot of research but have a couple more questions...

We want no more than 3 but is it true that it is better to get an even number?
What breeds make the best pets?
Is it ok to mix different breeds?

I love orpingtons as pets they are sweet, and of course you can mix breeds. No harm in that

I have found that barred rock, dominique, marans, rhode islands, wyandottes, orpingtons are all very docile and handle confinement well, but are not always the best egg layers. I don't see a problem with having only 3 chickens, I wouldn't have more than one rooster with that group though, as they will probably fight over the pretty ladies
