    (1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes very new to chickens. We got chickens right before Christmas, due to our neighbor loosing their home to forecloser.

    (2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Currently have two plan to add to our flock in the coming year.

    (3) What breeds do you have?
Our rooster is a barred rock and our only hen is a Black Cochin Bantam Mix I think.

    (4) How did you find out about
Came across the site while researching Barred Rock Chickens

    (5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Video games and Rescuing Animals. Hopefully plan to enter weight pulling and dog sledding competitions in the future with my Siberian Huskies.

I wasn't to sure about the whole owning chickens thing until I fell for these two lol Our rooster we call Big Boy and our black hen we call Miracle. We free range but only when supervised.

Hi and welcome to our community - glad that you have joined us here at BYC. The sooner you can get some more adult girls, the better - it will reduce mating pressure on your single girl at the moment. The suggested ration of roo to hen is 1:10. A great excuse for chicken maths to come into play! [IMG]

You'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre, and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area -

    All the best

Thanks for the warm welcomes. Currently looking into breeds that can handle our cold winters and hot humid summers.

Are you new to chickens? When did you first get chickens?

Very new to chickens. We got our girls on May 1, 2016 as babies.

How many chickens do you have right now?

We have 6 girls (at least we are fairly certain they are girls lol)

    What breeds do you have?

Roxie is my favorite- she's a Barred Rock, but she thinks she is a lap dog.
Raven- a black Austrolorp who is friendly but VERY vocal (which I read isn't very common with her breed)
Honey- we think she is a red sex link, even though she was labeled at RK as a buff Orpington
CeCe- again, she was mislabeled, and we can't find any breeds that look like her, so we are guessing EE
Dotsy- another mislabeled bird at RK, but again we are thinking EE.
Cocoa- a Welsummer (we think?) who is our smallest. She is also the one we call "road runner" because she is so stinkin' fast!

How did you find out about BYC?

Ran across the app when I was researching.

What are some of your other hobbies?

We live on a crop farm where my husband farms about 1300 acres of soybeans and corn. We love country living- four wheelers, gators, camping, etc. My daughter is 11 and is pretty serious about dance (ballet, jazz, and hip hop). I work full time with Aflac, but my schedule is flexible, so I get to spend most of my lunch breaks with my chicks. We love swimming, adrenaline filled activities, and just being with our large extended family.

I live outside of Owensboro, KY (in Utica), near Evansville Indiana.
