new coop and chickens

Nice looking coop. Reminds me of a mens outhouse. No offense in that, mind you. In ye' olden times the star was used to represent a mans only outhouse where a moon represented a womans outhouse.

Over time the mens outhouses fell into disarray because, well, men don't clean up well.. So the crescent moon survived as the sole symbol.

Ok.. Enough history 101. Nice coop.

The only thing I can think to add would be some ventilation holes.. .One above the door and another on the other side in the same position.

Add a little paint, and an enclosed run out the back where the pop door is and viola!

Also does it have an electric source for lights for laying and is it insulated? It gets cold there doesn't it?

Great coop!

Please be sure you have some ventilation. Even in the dead of winter in your climate, there needs to be some high-up air flow.

An electrical source would be wonderful. If nothing else, you can make a simple device from a metal cookie tin and a lamp socket to keep their water thawed. It looks like your roosts are the wide side of a 2X4, which is good as it will prevent frostbite on the feet by allowing them to sit on their feet. Frostbitten combs can also be an issue, though, at least for some breeds. You might or might not decide to provide some heat in winter. There are folks on here who keep chickens in northern Alaska....

Supplemental light to encourage increased egg production is a bit of a controversial issue. You can find a lot of info here on this subject.

Maybe you are already aware of these issues, in which case, ignore me....

Love the coop with the nesting boxes on both sides!!!! The picture of your son holding the pitch fork with your daughter is darling...

WELCOME!!!! You've come to the right place if you have question, concerns or just want to share. I Love It!!!!
