I am about to start building a new coop for 5-8 chickens in the driveway, the build will be on tarmac/concrete. I want to build an integrated run and coop, which will be behind a fence, I also have rabbits and quail in self contained raised cages, which will also be behind the fence. I am in Europe so the main predators are foxes and pine martens, along with dogs & cats etc, nothing with ‘hands’.
My question is are there any coop designs which are better for solid bases? Is there anything extra I need to include?
I haven’t built a chicken coop before, but I have a tonne of decent wood from a shed we just took down to use up. (The shed couldn’t be used for chickens it was in the way of the next build project)
I have looked at a million coop designs but am just not sure if there is anything particularly relevant to hard bases.

Welcome to BYC. If you put your general location into your profile people will be able to give you better-targeted advice.

Are you planning to put the run onto the concrete too?

Concrete can be good for a coop -- because it is absolutely proof against any digging predators that you have -- but it's problematic for a run because it frustrates chickens' natural instinct to dig and scratch so that you'd need a very DEEP layer of litter. It's not impossible, but more difficult.

Here in the US it's common to build sheds and other outbuildings on concrete pads and you can find a large assortment of metal brackets for securing the posts: https://www.homedepot.com/b/Buildin...ardware-Post-Brackets-Post-Bases/N-5yc1vZc8hs

Concrete floor is excellent. Will keep they're nails down. No rodents enter either. Just make sure that you build a dirt bird bath for them to clean their feathers. Please post pictures when completed. Thanks

Hi we are in northern italy, unfortunately I can’t build on the grass areas as we do have wolves so I need to keep the animals close to the house, the concrete/tarmac drives runs all the way round the house and is enclosed by a 5-6ft wall. Locally everyone’s chickens free range, but I am not sure I am brave enough!
I can deep litter the run but I worry about it being soggy as the drainage would be compromised. I have a field enclosed by high fencing but it has my falcon mews on it and I wasn’t sure about putting the chickens close to the mews as I thought it could upset them (the chickens) The field is about an acre with a bit of hard standing I could build on.
Which is the lesser of two evils? I am just going round in circles with the options 🤦🏽‍♀️

Is electric fence a viable option for you?
