Hello BYC!!! So with the current situation (Corona lock down) I decided it's no better than the present to start my coop build for our new girls. Luckily, I had the material on hand. So here we go!
Upon doing research and from the knowledge of Y'all, I decided to make a coop 5x5. We have 4 birds, so it should be plenty of room for them!
The space I have designated is behind my shed in a nice little corner. With the help of the boss (wife), we leveled the pyramid blocks and placed the platform. Now it's time to frame the walls!
I decided to make the front wall 5 foot and the rear wall 4 foot to provide enough slope for the roof to keep clear. It will also provide enough headroom for us to get inside and clean, etc.
Walls! So it may be overkill, but considering I obtained a bunch of it for free, I am skinning the coop with some 3/4 inch plywood. With that and the 2x4 wall construction, this thing is built like, as they say, "a brick S%&T house". That being said, it will also provide ample pocket space for insulation if needed.
Same Material for the roof (I have a TON of it). As you can see, I installed 2x4 rafters for the roof deck to sit on. In doing so, it will allow space above the wall and below the roof that I will install mesh material for air venting. Hopefully that will be enough! I also extended the front roof line enough for protection from the Michigan elements and also to provide an attachment point for the fencing and door I plan on installing for the outer pen.
My daughter asked if she can sleep out there with the chickens. Ha!
