Hello, newb here. I'm going to build a coop and run in my yard. I am going to re-pourpose an old raised bed that is 4' x 24'. I won't ever have more than 8 hens (City Ord.) probably 5 or 6 will do anyway. I'm thinking I'll build a 4' x 6' coop in the center leaving a 4' x 9' run on either side of the coop. The idea is to rotate the run space. I have not started building yet but I'd love to hear suggestions on the best use of the space? Smaller/bigger coop? Smaller/bigger run space(s), should I position the coop at the end to make a larger single run space? Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Make your coop big enough for bad weather days when the hens can't go out. if they are crowded, they will peck each other. My coop is 8'x7' and the run is 12'x8'. I started with 2 hens, then got 6 chicks. The 8 hens did very well in the coop only. I wanted more chickens, so I built the run. I have 20 hens total now. My coop is dirt floored. I use the deep litter method and dig it out once or twice a year. The girls make lovely compost for the garden and yard. Study the coop section and study the predator section. Learn from other's mistakes. Even though we live in town, i built a Fort Knox coop and run. We have raccons, possums, hawks and snakes.
