I am so sorry you lost some. The feeder I will eventually build is designed by mdees88, search on zero waste feeder and the posters name. It is a great design

I have slide-out waste trays on the bottoms of my cages that also protect the birds from predators from below. You might consider something like that as a way to address your critter issue.

For feeding, I'm using a J-feeder (7-inch solid bottom). I've stretched one-inch chicken wire across the opening to allow them to eat but not to spill food or take crumble dust baths.
