I finished the run today, and installed the lid. I'll add some rain shelter later. Just gotta install the electric fence.

I won't say it is raccoon proof, but they are gonna have one heck of a time getting in there, if they can get past the electric fence.

Made a waterer out of a 5 gallon bucket and a planter base. $5.

Tired. Time for a beer, some ice cream, and bed. Hmmmm, Cherry Garcia.

Also, feel free to use my designs on anything I've built. Most of them are things I saw somewhere on the web. If you get stuck, let me know, and I'll walk you through it.

The chicks love the run. They can fly, chase each other, dig and scratch, and basically hang out. They are now pros at the ramp. Took them a day, but they already use everything out there.

I am a complete newbie to all this (first post on BYC and all...), but am at the thinking stage of planning a coop myself. Just wanted to tell you what a huge inspiration this thread has been to me, and to thank you very much for it. The detailed photos are especially helpful. My coop will be smaller and not as high-tech - the self-opening door, electric fence etc - but I hope to incorporate things like the insulation, feeding and watering system and loft roost. Let us know how the automatic egg collection works when your girls get to that point!

Awesome coop and run and I'm so jealous of your shop!!

How long did it take for the chickens to learn to use the nipple waterers? I need to figure out a watering system for my flock. I have a hanging waterer and I keep it just about 1" off the floor, but every morning when I go in the coop to refresh water and feed I have water all over the floor. The culprit is my runner duck, she just makes a complete mess eating and drinking.

They had the trick on the nipple waterer down in about 10 minutes. Just remove all other sources of water. You might also want to raise your waterer to the level of their back. That should stop some water loss.

Dogfish you are absolutely amazing! Got room there for me and my chicks? We dont eat too much, and I can cook and clean! LOL.
