I would try it now, before you leave. It will let you test the structure. And if you get a predator, well probably only loose one bird. You can address the weakness or get someone to close the door while you are gone.
However, if you leave before you test it, well no - one around for 3-5 nights, a predator that can get in will be back.... and then you could come home to no birds.
I never shut mine...and when we built a new set up, we did find some weaknesses that a coon pointed out to us a couple of times... think we have it now.
