Welcome! I'm in DFW area in Texas. I started with two little silkie pullets I got for a Christmas present! Too cute for words!!!
Just feed them what the feed store guy/lady recommends--organic or plain, depending on your sensibilities--keep them dry, warm when its cold (we keep our coop 40 degrees + if possible) and cool (have an exhaust fan in the storage room/coop) in summer. Plus we keep big plant saucers of water in the shade for them to drink and play in. Our girls get morning food and enclosed outside protection until noonish, then are let out to find bugs, eat weed seeds, etc and to run and play chickey games. Put nest boxes about a foot high with nice clean straw inside for them to lay eggs. Keep everything clean by getting rid of poo to put in a compost pile. I have neighbors who want the dried poo (I put in a bucket that sits outside for a week) for their gardens. When they lay eggs, we share with our neighbors. I have learned not to wash the eggs, just rub dirt/poo off with a rough rag or dry sponge--as they have a natural protection layer put on them by hens! So helpful! refrigerate. share! laugh!
Enjoy my chicken newsletter either though email (check out my profile contact info) or see my facebook Sandra Higgins Hanna, in the Notes section. It's never a dull month.
