I plan on building a coop inside a 7x10 dog run. This is my first attempt at chickens and will only have 4-6 at one time. I know there is some math about space for each bird, what I was wondering is, what about head room. From reading here on the forums the birds will use the coop for sleeping and laying and spend most of their time outside. As they are cooped up how much head room is needed so they don't feel squashed. As far as perches go, does it need to be a certain distance off the floor? I'll have external nest boxes so there's more room inside, and the coop will be elevated. I'm not sure how big these birds get they are Golden Comets. thanks.

Chickens need about 2 feet head room above their roosts. More, if your chickens are taller.

YOU need headroom in the coop to clean it, too. Not a whole lot more annoying than having a short coop you have to lean into or crawl into to clean it out!
