One nice thing about external boxes is that you can reach under a hen from behind sitting on eggs without getting pecked which happens from front collection! They don't mind a quick grab at all! I will collect from inside and then go around if a hen is in the nest. Shooing them off the nest or a frontal grab is OK if you don't mind all the drama from the hen or a few pecks.
