Converted sheds make great coops! Pre-fab ones aren't big enough or durable, so you'll likely end up spending more or replacing it if you go that route.

We have a great Coops Page here for some inspiration, if you haven't already seen it. Hopefully one of those beautiful designs will help in building your coop.

Never had time for chickens but now I have plenty of spare time. I’m in Region 8!and it’s cooling down finally. Should I plan ahead and get my chicks in the spring?

Hiya, and welcome to BYC!

We live in Wisconsin (Zone 4), so we don't want little chicks in the winter. That means they have to stay in the brooder and can never venture outside for a couple of months.

But if I lived down where you do, I'd probably have them all the time.
