Well, it's almost complete. The ducks and chickens are able to live out there at least, and no longer have to reside in my garage - a situation I think we're all happier with!

Both the ducks and chickens reside here, in separate evening quarters. My plan had been to divide the structure down the middle with wire, as I had taken seriously the advice from many that ducks and chickens aren't suited to living together. However, they have all been getting along quite well so, for now, they will share the same "yard" area. They eat the same food and I think all my ducks are hens, so no mating problems. I'll be watching for problems though.

I'm pretty proud of this structure. So far we have about $20.00 into it, for door hinges and a couple braces. All the lumber was scrap from household projects and our neighbor's scrap pile. We even made due with all the screws and nails we'd saved over the years. We will need to buy plywood for the roof (right now it's just a tarp) and will need wire and 2x4's to frame in the front. To start with I am just using that plastic wire you get from Wal-mart for the garden. Since we don't have racoons and such the wire isn't such a big deal.

My husband works from home, so during the day the birds are let out into the backyard to wander and graze. A friend donated some metal fence posts and some shrimp net to make a regular fenced in yard for them. That will go up soon.

So, here it is in various stages. And yes, the inside is lavender and purple!!! We used paint that was leftover from painting a bedroom. Unfortunately we ran out on the duck side, so I'm going to use some extra green paint I have for that.

Here's the beginning building:

Starting to frame up the roof of the duck house and floor of the chicken coop (no, it's not square. We didn't level the ground under the duck house because it slopes toward a good drainage area.):

The framed in chicken side:

The finished product (duck house on left - note the storage on top of duck house for feed and hay):

I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!! Great Job! I like how you can sit in front and watch them through the Big screen! lol. one question...where is the door? Or do you have a place in back just to collect Eggs?

Haha! Good question. Well, since we are all so well skilled in the art of osmosis...

Just joking! Because the front is just temporary plastic wire the right hand side is just hooked on nails, so we unhook the middle and bottom sections and go in. Eventually we will have a framed in door and real wire (hardware cloth) over the front.

But, we do have an egg collection door at the back right of the chicken house. I am building nest boxes now. My girls are only about 12 weeks so we have a little time.

Also, the whole front of the duck house opens up for cleaning and the big purple door on the chicken house opens up for cleaning.

I also forgot to add that the outside and back walls of both houses are insulated and we're going to insulate the pallet walls on the side of both. The chicken coop also has a small hole drilled in the back right side of the roof where the heat lamp goes. I'm also planning on building a big feed big that they all can eat out of. Right now all I have are the small chick feeders and the girls fight like crazy over that!

I love it!!

We have our chickens and ducks housed together. They share everything. Same coop and same run. At nite the ducks sleep on the floor of the coop and the chickens roost above them. We've had it this way for several years with no probs at all.

Yeah, in the 3rd picture, before the big door went on, you can see a dark purple 2x4. That's the inside roost. It runs the width of the coop. I went with a 2x4 because it does get cold enough for frostbite here and I wanted them to be able to sit on their feet. It took them a couple days to get used to it but now they all hop right up on it when they go to bed. I also have a 2x2 underneath the coop as an outdoor roost. I would like to put a couple more up, or build some sort of a ladder structure, so they can roost at different levels - just haven't gotten there yet.
