New Duck House

Thanks we got 4 mallards, 4 khaki Campbells, 2 cayugas and 3 Indian Runners. If I’m not mistaken the inside is 48”x 48” and the front is 4’ tall and the back is 3’ tall
Great looking duck house!

That is the same size as my duck house, including the slope of the roof. It has worked really well for us.

I notice that you have slide latches on your doors. If you have raccoons in your area, I would consider putting carabiner clips on your slide latches to make them much harder for a raccoon to open. I have heard that a raccoon can open anything a two-year-old child can, given time.

I will add that we have just three ducks. We had four, but . . . raccoons. I might put as many as six in my duck house for overnights, but more than that would be quite crowded. I’ve heard a minimum of two square feet per duck for sleeping quarters. I would be reluctant to put eight ducks in my duck house. They put out so much moisture and poo that I think it would be hard to keep any bedding dry without a lot of windows for ventilation.

My concerns would be frostbite in winter, mold growth in warmer weather, and a concentration of ammonia fumes from duck poo. My duck house has large wire mesh windows on all four sides because I live in an area with frigid winters and hot and humid summers. I cover the windward two windows in winter.

What type of bedding are you using in your house?

Ditto for me! I'm glad you mentioned the lack of ventitation because that was the very first thing I noticed! I also cover a couple of the big open areas of my pen (hardware cloth) with a couple big pieces of cardboard when it gets really cold outside.

This is a really beautiful pen though!
