Hi everyone. My name is Louise, my husbands is Rick. We are %100 new to ducks. It all started with my son, Ricky. He wanted ducks and got myself interested in it. We also have a little 12 year old miniature Dachshund with a strong prey drive. It was going to be a challenge. Ricky ordered 5 unhatched eggs online. We placed them in the incubator(following all the directions we could find). 27 to 28 days later the hatching began. So exciting !. We have 1 cayuga, 2 khaki campbell and 1 mallard. One mallard egg didn't make it. It was so sad. Now they are 3 1/2 weeks old. They are huge ! So tiny at first , now 4 to 5 times bigger. The feathers are coming in. We keep them in our garage now. The first 3 weeks inside our home in a large tote. We are looking to purchase a good sized duck coop w/ a fenced in yard area. We take them out in the fresh air daily for exercise. They also go swimming in the warmed bathtub in the house. They do so love their time in the tub ! I've never seen them so happy and filled with such joy as when they are in my tub. My sweet little doxie , Isabella is not so pleased about them. They ignore her. We keep them separated from her. I don't know if she will ever take to them. We'll just have to wait and see.

Congrats on your hatch! I know it's common that not all of them make it through, but it's still sad. And, yes, they do grow SO fast!

It sounds like they are well loved. Maybe Isabella will get used to them -- especially as they get closer in size to a mini Doxie (which are absolutely adorable dogs!)?

If you need any help or just want to talk about how incredibly cute ducklings are, this is the place! Welcome to BYC, Louise!
