New duckie and chicken owner, NEED ADVICE PLEASE!!!

Ok sounds good, I would like to train my aussie to herd, if that's even necessary, to get them back in the coop when I decide to free range them. I've never noticed coyotes, sometimes other dogs but my dogs don't really let any critters on my property. I'm sure once I have livestock like this I will see more predators, my dogs stay inside during the day, I have built a fence so they will be outside during the summer. I plan on ginnies (don't think I spelled that right) which I was just going to build a raised box on the outside of my already standing coop and on the inside of the enclosed run, that's later on tho.

That sounds awesome! I wanted to get a Border Collie myself! Predators certainly be a problem! I am sure you will find all kinds of predator help on this forum! And guineas are cool! Well I say that but I don't actually own any. I have just done a lot of reading about them. My mom wants some!

Sounds like you are doing great. There is a plethora of information on this site about raising poultry!
Be sure and check it out.
Watch your heat source! Make sure they can all get away from it if they want.
I always say you need to worry more about too hot than too cold.
good luck with the babies.
Personally I keep my dog away. But then he is a spaniel!
The cats ignore the birds...how odd is that?
Enjoy!

I think one big mistake some people make with dogs is to hold a chick up to their face so they can meet. The dog assumes you are offering him a treat - not good.

That is kinda funny! I forgot to mention that I wouldn't put the chicks on the ground in front of the dog either. Our biggest dog loves everything and tries to play with it and so when I showed a little chick ....she jumped on it, more like she slammed it with her paw! The chick lived but was mentally messed up for the rest of that poor things life!
