New duckling is a spazz!

Hi! I’ve been raising chickens and ducks for the last two years.
I recently decided to add to the family and got a few chicks and one Cayuga duckling, she was super sweet and loved to just cuddle up on your neck or be in a shirt/pocket and sleep.
Unfortunately she got sick on day 4 and passed away.. fast forward to today, I got a new duckling and she is absolutely spastic. She wants to be held but if you let go she runs and climbs to the highest place and won’t fall asleep anywhere when she is out of the brooder box. Both roughly the same age, is it normal to have such polar opposites? Also will my new one ever calm down?

If she is a lone duckling that's the problem. ducks are flock animals. She needs a companion.

She may not sleep outside of the brooder because she needs warmth from the brooder plate/lamp. She may sleep being held because of your warmth, but she won't be comfortable out of warmth for prolonged periods of time.

Ducks are flock animals, as I'm sure you know, and its very, very important that she has at least one duckling friend the same age. She won't be happy with the chicks for long, especially with the amount of wet mess ducklings make. They won't be happy housed in the same brooder for long.

What are you currently feeding her? Ducklings need different food than chicks, and if they lack in niacin (something chick feed lacks the right amount of) they can become very unwell very fast and it can be fatal.

It sounds like this duckling is simply a normal, healthy energetic baby. My duckling was so energetic and excited about the world that I called her Sprightly. She never really changed, lol. Calmed a little once she hit adult months.

Why get just one ? They need to be with a buddy ti stay calm
