So I got my first ducklings this week. I got 12 (4 Cayugas the rest are a surprise) after I ordered I continued to read up on ducks and started to worry I would have my hands full with 12. They arrived Thursday morning and so far so good it hasn’t been all that bad. They are super messy with their water but that was to be expected and seem to love to nibble on my rings, hands and sleeves.

Do you have their outdoor setup ready? You do have your hands full but they will be a lot of fun!! You just have to make sure your female to male ratio is good (3 to 1) once they are sexable.

We have a pretty large chicken coop (I also have 30 chicks) there’s a chicken room a climate controlled room for the brooders and egg wash and another area that will be for the ducks. We have a pond partially dug out for them already.

Well you sounds perfectly prepared then!! Will you be keeping the chickens and ducks together?

I think it’s going to depend on the duck if they want to stay in there with the chickens I won’t stop them.

Just make sure to have a backup plan. Not speaking from personal experience- but I have heard sometimes ducks and chickens don’t get along (especially during breeding season). I’m sure you’ll figure it out though! It may be simple to just put up a divider or something.
