Hi everyone. Just joined the group today. I've been checking this site for months for information to help with my new hobby - raising chickens. I've never raised chickens before, this is my first attempt. I spent a few months reading articles, buying chicken magazines to read up, even attended a two hour teaching seminar on raising and caring for chickens at a local feed store. I ended up adopting my first girls March 12th this year. My plan was for 6 chicks. Then that grew to 8. But then I decided on three breeds and thought it made sense to have the same number of each breed, so it was 9. When I went to the local feed store to purchase my chicks, they talked me into another three. So I started with 12. I have 3 each of Wellsummers, Buff Orpingtons, Australorps, and Ameracuanas. They were all supposed to be girls, but sometimes there a boy gets in the mix, and sure enough, I ended up with a male. My girls didn't start laying until about 2 1/2 weeks ago. I've had one incident. Although I attempted to ensure that there were no openings in my chicken coop, (which is a converted shed), a rat seems to have found a small gap at the bottom of the coop door and tried to grab one of the girls. Her comb was cut and there was some bruising. But she is totally healed and back in the fold. It was interesting taking my chicken into the vet, especially in a cat carrier. I look forward to sharing information and learning from all of you. Jenn

Hello and welcome!! Yes, we all, at some point have fallen victim to chicken math! It sounds like you are on the right track with your reading and studying - and this site has definitely been a life saver for me and my flock!
Best of luck with your newest, best hobby! :)

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow You've definitely learned about chicken math... Hey, we're so happy you joined us:ya

:welcome

Thanks for the nice intro! How fortunate you are to have a vet that will look at chickens, so many of them won't.

Best of luck to you!

It may have been one rat but, when you see one, there are many more you don't see.
You may want to check out the predator threads for information on preventing another attack.

Would be a great time to get some Jack Russell terriers - they are ROUGH on rats.
