My family has had chickens for as long as I can remember which is about 20 years! Although one time we didn't have chickens for a while because they all died from old age, getting hit on the road, or from some critter sneaking in the coop before we could shut the door. But we got chickens again this past year because we missed farm fresh eggs and the silly antics of the chickens! But during the time when we didn't have chickens my sister who is older than me decided to turn the old chicken coop into a tack room for the horses! But before it was a chicken coop it was an old milk house so it has nice concrete floors and walls so no critters could dig up from underneath it. So anyways, as the chicks were growing up we kept them in a little trailer and we started renovating the old emu shed which hasn't been used in like 10 years. We insulated it with fiberglass and one dollar metal doors to cover the insulation, and put new plywood down for flooring with linoleum to cover it. And that took about a month and a half. Right after we put the chicks in the new coop I started digging all around the shed and placed heavy duty cooler racks in the holes so if something was trying to dig they would run into those. And they have a little chicken run, although I don't know if you could call it a run because it's just a fence that goes around the posts that hold up the awning. The chickens get to free range all 7 acres we have and are very friendly because I handled them a lot when they were chicks. But we have 1 white crested polish who is our only rooster, 1 dark Cornish, 1 white rock or white Orpington, 3 white rocks or white Orpington, 2 turkens, 2 black stars, 6 red stars. Although if you still are reading this what are your thoughts about straw vs. Sand as bedding?
