New Englanders! Much ado about New England!

Hi there, Muzzie, I love your avatar!

We used to free-range when we only had a few hens. Now that we have 12 hens, 7 ducks and a rooster, we've had problems with a hawk. They only free range when we're out in the yard. (We were home but indoors when the hawk attacked.) Now they're in a covered pen unless we're out there. We may be able to let them out more when our trees are leafed out. We only have a half acre yard and when the trees are fully leafed out you can't see into the yard from the air!

So it is possible to free range them just some of the time? I know they go back to their coop at dusk, but what if you want to get them back into the pen before that? I have visions of chasing chickens across the yard while I'm running late to get somewhere! LOL!
Maybe I should teach the poodle to herd?!

We just don't let them out if we've got somewhere to go - I'm not wasting my time chasing chickens! As long as you've got a nice run to keep them safe if you can't let them out all over the yard then they're fine for a day or two not getting out. Mine stand at the run fence and whine at me when I'm out in the yard, like little kids!

so, this is my 1st post on BYC and this thread looks like as good a place as any to start.

I'm in Gilford NH, moved here a year ago from Cape Cod MA. I grew up on the Cape and moved back after some years away. Raised my kids there and couldn't wait to leave again. I love the slower pace of being int he mountains.

No chicks yet because we're renting. Hope to find a suitable house to buy this summer, I'm getting tired of looking!

it sure is! We had originally thought we'd live over near Mt. Sunapee but work brought us here and we love it here.

Now I just need to find a house to buy, or a lot to build on, so I can get another Aussie and some chickens already!
