We started a small flock of laying chicks this spring. We live in an urban area one street over from Main Street and in a historic district. We have a flock of 12 consisting of 4 Barred Plymouth Rock, 2 Buff Orpingtons, and 6 Americaunas of varying colors. We want to raise chickens for lots of reasons, especially to help our children (12 and 8 year old boys) understand the food chain and what it takes to get food on the table. So far, we are really enjoying our chicks (they are almost two months old now). Our coop is in the works. I now know why buying a coop premade is so expensive. Even with salvaged materials, we are spending way more than I thought we would. But our chicks will live in a Coop Mahal with a home that blends in well in our neighborhood.

! Great to have you with us! Best of luck with your coop construction and have fun with your flock!

Thanks for all the happy welcomes! We are in Central Kentucky, by the way. And I don't know if it is ever going to stop raining long enough for us to get our coop built. I will post pics when it is done. We got lots of inspiration from BYC coops when we started the planning process. I am so excited about being a chicken mom. We so far have not lost any of our chicks, which is a surprise because everything I read said to expect to lose some due to illness, disease, critters, whatever in their chick stage. We started at 12 and still have 12. Go team supdike!!!
